5000 years – Changes in the use of horticultural plants in ancient and modern Egypt

English: On the occasion of the Humboldt Days, in the frame of interactive lecture participants will get acquainted with the flora of the Ancient Egypt, which has undergone significant changes already in the time of the pharaohs. We will talk about the Sahara, how it has become a semi-desertic land from the former savannah. Plants were introduced due to the northern trade relations and conquests of Pharaoh, which caused significant changes in the Egyptian flora and later in the Roman Empire, especially in the New (“Rome’s pantry”). Papyrus and medieval forestry have disappeared, while large sugar cane cultures were developed. Facts will be presented about the introduction of cotton, and finally how modern Egyptian agriculture developed with the creation of Lake Naser.

Szó lesz a kezdeti szavannás területből az éghajlatváltozás következtében félsivataggá vált majd teljesen elsivatagosodott Szaharáról, és a fáraókori északi kereskedelmi kapcsolatok és hódítások miatt betelepített növényekről, melyek különösen az Újbirodalom és perzsa időszakban okoztak jelentős változásokat Egyiptom flórájában, majd a római birodalmon belüli kereskedelem és gazdasági igény (“Róma éléskamrája”) okozta mezőgazdasági átalakulásról. A későbbi időszakban a papirusz eltűnéséről, a középkori erdőgazdálkodásról, a cukornád megjelenéséről, a gyapot betelepítéséről, végül a Naszer-tó létrejöttével kialakult modern egyiptomi mezőgazdaságról tájékozódhatnak a résztvevők.
